William T. Carey

Firefighter William T. Carey, age 34, of the New Haven Fire Department was killed in an apparatus accident with another vehicle while responding to a call at the Hotel Duncan on Chapel Street for a report of a structure fire. The vehicle hit the right rear side of Engine Company 2, causing the apparatus to turn overthrowing three firemen on the rear step to the pavement. Fireman William Carey, suffered multiple injuries and was transported to St. Raphael’s Hospital by ambulance, where he later passed away. Driver Mauro was thrown from the apparatus and died in the on impact.

This firefighter line of duty fatality occurred before the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial was built in Emmitsburg, Maryland. While this firefighter has not been officially honored at the Memorial site, there are plans to do so when resources are available.
