William E. Craighead

Firefighter William E. Craighead, age 59, of the Lynchburg Fire Department died on February 21, 1940 from injuries he sustained after falling off the back of a responding engine.

William who was one of the oldest members of the department at the time of his death. He joined the department in 1910 and served the Lynchburg Fire Department for nearly 30 years.

He was survived by his wife, Mrs. Callie Turner Craighead, his daughter Mrs. W. E. Dodson, and brothers and sisters James Craighead, W.M. Turner, Charlie Witt, and Nelia Craighead.

This firefighter line of duty fatality occurred before the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial was built in Emmitsburg, Maryland. While this firefighter has not been officially honored at the Memorial site, there are plans to do so when resources are available.
