Russell Tarr

Captain Russell H. Tarr was born in Lewiston, Maine on September 1, 1901. He joined the Lewiston Fire Department on December 12, 1933. He died in the line-of-duty on July 12, 1949 at the age 48 from injuries suffered on June 7, 1949 when Lewiston and Auburn fire trucks collided at Court and Main Streets in Auburn as both departments responded to a fire alarm. Private Marcien A. Vallee also was killed.

This firefighter line of duty fatality occurred before the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial was built in Emmitsburg, Maryland. While this firefighter has not been officially honored at the Memorial site, there are plans to do so when resources are available.
