Robert P. Coombs

Firefighter Robert P. Coombs, age 34, of the Des Plaines Fire Department died while trying to rescue three trapped workers in a sanitary sewer on April 26, 1962.

Robert joined the Des Plaines Fire Department as a career firefighter on May 1, 1956.

He is survived by his wife, Grace; two sons Mark and Richard; a daughter Marilyn; his parents Robert and Leona; and brother Donald.

This firefighter line of duty fatality occurred before the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial was built in Emmitsburg, Maryland. While this firefighter has not been officially honored at the Memorial site, there are plans to do so when resources are available.
