John J. Geswell

Fire Lieutenant John J. Geswell, age 40, of the Boston Fire Department, lost his life along with 4 others, on October 1, 1964, during a collapse while fighting a vacant 4-story factory fire at 34 Trumbull Street.

This firefighter line of duty fatality occurred before the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial was built in Emmitsburg, Maryland. While this firefighter has not been officially honored at the Memorial site, there are plans to do so when resources are available.

  1. John, I lived 3 doors down from you on Victoria St. I was 13 years old on that terrible night. We heard the call go out on my Dad’ fire radio, it was very sad. You were always nice to us kids, and I’ve always remembered you whenever I heard of Firefighters falling on the line. Now I’m 70 years old and still remember you and get sad at the thought of that night. God Bless you John!
