Private John B. Byrnes was born in County Kerry, Ireland in 1872. He joined the Lewiston Fire Department in 1904 and became a clerk of Hose Company #1. He died in the line-of-duty at the age of 38 on February 15, 1910 from injuries suffered on February 8, 1910 when he was thrown from a ladder into the street during a building collapse at Main and Middle Street.
