James Paul “Jiggs” Little

Firefighter James Paul “Jiggs” Little, age 25, of the Charleston Fire Department, died on March 4, 1949, when the floor collapsed during a fire at the Woolworth’s Department Store.

James was part of Charleston Fire Department’s Central Station crew for a little over a year.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn; his two sons, James Paul Jr., and Edward Lee; his two brothers, Aubrey, who is also a firefighter at the Central Fire Station, and Ottie; his four sisters, Mable, Grace, Roberta, and Bonnie; and his mother, Emma.

This firefighter line of duty fatality occurred before the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial was built in Emmitsburg, Maryland. While this firefighter has not been officially honored at the Memorial site, there are plans to do so when resources are available.
