Herman N. Lewis

Firefighter Herman N. Lewis, age 56, of the Indianapolis Fire Department died of a heart attack shortly after arriving to a 2-alarm fire on March 22, 1944.

Herman had over 25 years in the department and was stationed at Engine 18. He was detailed to Engine 13 at the time of the fire.

He was survived by Anna; two sons, Harold and Kenneth; daughter Laura Mae Wright; three brothers Frank, Charles, Price; and  sister Ida Lewis.

This firefighter line of duty fatality occurred before the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial was built in Emmitsburg, Maryland. While this firefighter has not been officially honored at the Memorial site, there are plans to do so when resources are available.
