Harold J. Griffis

Straw Boss Harold J. Griffis, age 37, of the New Tribes Mission died on July 9, 1953 while fighting the Rattlesnake Fire in the Powder House Canyon at Mendocino National Forest.

Harold served as a Private in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served in the 31st Engineer Combat Battalion, Company B.

This firefighter line of duty fatality occurred before the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial was built in Emmitsburg, Maryland. While this firefighter has not been officially honored at the Memorial site, there are plans to do so when resources are available.
