Freddie Summers

Firefighter Freddie Summers, age 27, of the Charleston Fire Department, died on March 4, 1949, when the floor collapsed during a fire at the Woolworth’s Department Store.

Freddie was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy.

He was a member of the Charleston Fire Department’s Central Fire Station for 6 years.

He is survived by his wife Ilene; his two daughters Linda Sue and Mary Kay; his father A.C. Summers; his half-brothers, Walter, Everett, Austin, Owen, Bryan, and Ernest; his sister Vidia; and his half-sisters Lola, Jane, Inas, Velva, and Avelee.

This firefighter line of duty fatality occurred before the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial was built in Emmitsburg, Maryland. While this firefighter has not been officially honored at the Memorial site, there are plans to do so when resources are available.
