Douglas E. Zabel

Doug Zabel died in the line of duty on January 7th, 1985. Doug was survived by his wife Judy, children Steve (age 13), Steph (age 11), and Mike (age 8), his parents Dewayne and Leona Zabel, brother Dan (Norma) Zabel, sisters Dianne (Gary) Leadjeld, Danette (Scott) Schad, Darcy (Joe) Pesta, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Doug was a Vietnam Veteran who made his career as an insurance agent, and was proud to serve on Sauk Centre’s Volunteer Fire Department for 9 years. Doug was a dedicated family man and loyal friend. He always made time for his immediate and extended family, while still finding time to help out a friend or neighbor. Doug was an active member of his community, serving as a past commander of the Sauk Centre VFW, a member of the Sauk Centre Rotary, a Boy Scout leader, and an active member of Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church.

Doug and Judy enjoyed traveling, and Doug loved the outdoors. Weekends included playing sports, spending the day on the lake, and family sleepovers in the ice house. Each summer he looked forward to spending time with his family on the Zabel family camping trips.

Doug was fun loving and had a heart of gold. He continues to be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
