Deo Lall Jr. was the epitome of what a firefighter should be. Long before his FDNY career, Deo demonstrated the qualities of New York’s bravest. He showed strength and athleticism on the football field of Port Richmond High School. His leadership skills were evident to his coaches and teammates, who elected him to be the team’s captain.
Deo pursued a career centered around helping others. He studied to become a radiology technologist and furthered his knowledge and skills by training as an interventional radiology technologist, a highly specialized role within the field. While employed at Staten Island University Hospital, he worked with a wide variety of patients and was respected by the physicians, nurses, and technologists who worked with him. His cheerful smile and good humor calmed the most nervous patients. His expertise and technical skills were appreciated during crucial emergency situations.
Deo amassed the attributes and skills of an athlete, leader, caregiver, and critical thinker, which paved the way for him to become a New York City firefighter. After completing the competitive FDNY testing and rigorous training, Deo became a member of New York’s Bravest. He was assigned to Engine 153 in Staten Island, his home borough. He was a valued addition to the firehouse, where his work ethic and humor were legendary.
In his 10-year career, Deo was a “go-to guy” at Engine 153. He was involved in many emergencies and gave his best effort to help others. At structural fires, medical emergencies, or in personal matters, you knew you were getting his best. Early in his career, he was asked to become an engine chauffeur, a highly regarded position.
Deo was known for his playful sense of humor. He always seemed to have a bag of tricks up his sleeve, keeping those around him on their toes. He was resourceful, always ready to lend a hand by rigging up solutions and fixing things with ease. Whether it was a fellow firefighter, or someone in need, Deo was always willing to help.
Although Deo had many roles in life, his favorite was being a husband and father. He met his wife, Devon, while working together as radiology technologists. Their sons, Deo III and Luca, were the light of his life. He cherished every moment spent with his boys. He loved being a family man and enjoyed frequent gatherings with extended family.
Whether rooting for the Miami Dolphins, playing recreational sports, undertaking a new project, or concocting his next playful prank, Deo displayed his funny, handy, and courageous spirit. His laughter will continue to echo in the hearts of his family and friends forever.
