Carlos A. Negron Sr, a life long resident of Jersey City, was in his thirteenth year as a Jersey City Firefighter when he made the supreme sacrifice. Although off duty, Carlos went to the assistance of fellow firefighters, who were raising a ladder to the third floor of a building involved in a 3 Alarm fire on March 20, 1993. The ladder became charged with high voltage from an electrical cable, fatally injuring Carlos and seriously injuring another firefighter. Carlos left behind a widow, Epifania Negron and two children, Carlos and Susan Ann.
He had been a popular and active member of the community, spending much of his free time as an officer of the Gong Club, Jersey City’s fire buff organization, and was co-founder of the Hispanic Firefighters’ Society.
Following his death, a group of friends and fellow fire fighters organized the Carlos Negron Memorial Run in Liberty State Park to preserve his memory. The inaugural race was held on October 2, 1993. The race is generously supported by the corporate community in the New Jersey area. All proceeds of the race are donated to the St. Barnabas Burn Foundation, Livingston, NJ. The Burn Center at St. Barnabas is the premier burn care facility in New Jersey. This race is dedicated to the support of quality burn care, the promotion of fire safety and preserving the memory of one of Jersey City’s bravest, Carlos Negron!
On behalf of the the Burn Team at Saint Barnabas, we celebrate the life of Carlos Negron, honor his memory and pray for his family. Each year at the Carlos Negron 5K Race we all come together to remember his sacrifice.
