Jessica L. Wyman

Lieutenant Jessica L. Wyman of Nashua Fire Rescue, Engine Company 4, died Tuesday November 28, 2023, at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center in Nashua, after a courageous battle with occupational lung cancer from her 26 years as a firefighter.

Lieutenant Wyman worked for the Nashua Fire Department for 16 years and was the first female firefighter to be promoted to the rank of lieutenant in department history. Prior to that, she worked for the Merrimack Fire Department as a firefighter/paramedic. Lieutenant Wyman also served as a rescue specialist for Massachusetts Task Force 1 (FEMA Urban Search and Rescue Team) and had been deployed several times throughout the country, including a two-week deployment to New Orleans immediately following Hurricane Katrina.

Lieutenant Wyman also worked in several positions at Southern New Hampshire Medical Center in Nashua, serving as a paramedic, emergency department nurse, and executive director of In-Patient and Critical Care Services. In 2021, she graduated from Eastern Kentucky University, receiving her Doctor of Nursing Practice.

Early in her career, Lieutenant Wyman competed in multiple sports, which included soccer, hockey, and semi-pro football. She was a world ranked powerlifter and competed in events across the United States and in Europe.

In 2007, Lieutenant Wyman created Camp Fully Involved, a weeklong program hosted at the New Hampshire Fire Academy that focused on young women ages 14 to 20 who have an interest in the fire service. The program focuses on strength, confidence, and leadership, while allowing the program participants to experience the daily life of a firefighter. Lieutenant Wyman lived by the program motto “Tell me and I forget; show me and I remember; involve me and I understand.”

Lieutenant Wyman shared her love for the fire service with her husband, Chris, for the 30 years they were together. Jess and Chris enjoyed life to the fullest. They worked hard, played harder, travelled the world together, and enjoyed raising some amazing dogs.
