John Michael Pridemore was born on February 12, 1968, in Springfield, Illinois, and was an avid Chicago Cubs and Bears fan. John moved around during his life and lived in Oregon, Massachusetts, and finally decided to call Delaware home in 1989. In early 1990, John and his wife, Kim, moved to the town of Clayton, where he immediately became involved in serving the local community.

On January 8, 1991, John joined the Clayton Fire Company No. 1, where he climbed through the ranks of the company. During his 31 years of service, John proudly and honorably served in many roles which include firefighter, lieutenant, captain, deputy chief, and was ultimately elected chief of the fire line in 2021. He was chief when he passed away on March 8, 2022. Additionally, John was the company’s secretary, vice president, and president. He also served as president of the Kent County Firefighters Association in 2012. John was always eager to step up to help the fire company and local community. As a leader, he led from the front and never asked someone to do something he wouldn’t do himself.

John also served his country as a military police officer in the United States Army Reserve from 1986-1998. During his outstanding service to our nation, John earned the Army Service Ribbon, Army Reserve Overseas Training Ribbon, Army NCO Professional Development Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, and the California National Guard Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service.

John was a devoted family man, leaving behind his wife of nearly 30 years, Kim Pridemore; children, Amanda Lawrence and Michael Pridemore; and granddaughter, Sadie Lawrence. They were his whole world. He also loved his dog, Lily.

John had great friends who had become family. Together they enjoyed going to football games, getting to together for dinner, and orange crushes at the beach. He also enjoyed boating and crabbing with the family. He loved cars and had recently purchased a red 1967 Camaro convertible that he was very proud of. He was very loving, kind, and selfless. He could also be extremely stubborn and single-minded. He had a great smile and loved to laugh. In January 2022, John was hired at his dream job and was excited to go to work every day. He was very happy and proud of his life.

John departed this earth doing what he loved, serving his community. This has been a great comfort to his family and friends that miss him dearly.
