Curious about the real-life impact your support of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation has? We invite you to meet our most recent scholarship recipients. We’re so very proud of these young men and women—and are delighted to introduce them to the Fire Hero Family community. Each of the recipients lost a parent (or spouse) firefighter to a line-of-duty death; they received their awards based on their financial need and academic performance.

Awards for academic year 2022-2023 totaled $508,159. These awards are made possible through a generous donation from Motorola Solutions Foundation, Inc.; the Alan Patrick Sondej Memorial Scholarship Fund; the Kenneth M. Hedrick Memorial Scholarship Fund; and the NFFF partnerships with MissionSquare Retirement, Burton A. Zipser and Sandra D. Zipser Foundation, National Association of State Fire MarshalsGlobal Health & Safety, the Steel Family’s Engine Company 5 Foundation, and countless other donations made towards the NFFF Scholarship Program.

Of our forty-one scholarship recipients, 71% are female and 29% are male. Thirty-four of the scholarship recipients (83%) are family members of a career firefighter (includes wildland and military) killed in the line of duty. In addition, nineteen scholarship recipients (46%) are pursuing an education in a STEM program or Public Safety field.

The NFFF scholarship program is underpinned by the combination of our recipients’ dedication to their academic goals and the continuing support of Motorola Solutions Foundation and our private donors and partners. The Foundation extends heartfelt appreciation for these committed scholarship donors—and we look forward to watching our recipients work toward their goals and realize their dreams!

About the Program

Since 1997, the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation’s Scholarship Program has awarded $5,777,382 in scholarships. Scholarships are awarded for undergraduate and graduate studies, vocational-technical training, and certification and job training programs in in-state or out-of-state public and private schools.

The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation is dedicated to honoring America’s fallen fire heroes; supporting their families, colleagues, and organizations; and working to reduce preventable firefighter death and injury. The Foundation ensures your donation is used effectively in the program of your choice. Charity Navigator has recognized the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation as a Four-Star Charity for seven consecutive years; NFFF has also earned the GuideStar Platinum Seal of Transparency—their highest level of recognition—for the second year in a row.  In the spirit of accountability and transparency, we work with each donor and match them with the program that best fits their giving goals. We always want to assure donations are used to make tangible and impactful differences in the lives of our Fire Hero Families.
