The annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb, first held in Denver, Colorado in 2005, is a commemorative event for firefighters to let the world know that "we will never forget." The stair climb was chosen as the format for this memorial for two reasons:

• FDNY firefighters on 9/11 climbed the stairs of the World Trade Center to reach the fire floors and to rescue and evacuate people. We will climb the stairs to honor each firefighter who died in the line of duty on September 11, 2001.
• In keeping with Initiative #6 of the 16 firefighter life safety initiatives, we are committed to firefighter safety through better fitness.

There are two types of events: one is for firefighters only and the other is open to both firefighters and members of the general public. Proceeds from both types of events will go to support the programs of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, which leads the nationwide effort to remember America's fallen firefighters and support their families.
