October 4 marks the beginning of National Fire Prevention Week. Begin promotion of your local activities by remembering America's fallen fire heroes.

Here are some ideas:

• Contact your local cable company to make sure they will air the national tribute and Candlelight Service, available via satellite. Provide them with the satellite coordinates and encourage them to publicize the broadcast.
• Invite local and state officials to view the televised tribute with you at the firehouse or another community site.
• Plan a local tribute before or after the national tribute. Include a ceremonial lowering of the American flag to half-staff. You can also order a special National Fallen Firefighters Memorial flag to display.
• Be sure to invite families of fallen firefighters from your community to be your special guests at planned events or tributes. It will mean a lot to those families.
• Ask the local community to observe a moment of silence at noon on Sunday, October 4, and sound local sirens if appropriate and announced in advance.
• Ask your local government officials to observe the day and issue a proclamation.
